I must confess admiration for Longstreet. In my mind he had a better understanding of how the weaponry of the times should dictate the tactics. His thinking had evolved beyond the Napoleonic mind set of his contempories. During the war Lee had his critics. But afterward he was elevated to the status of divine by the "unrepentant" Jubal Early and others. Early saw fit to lay blame on Longstreet, Jeff Davis, and any and all who took the oath. Old Pete's greatest victory was his role in getting Braxton Bragg removed from field command.
Richard Ewell confessed that if Stonewall Jackson had been at Gettysburg the "little round hills" would have been taken before the troops took their mid day meal. From that vantage Meade's line could have "rolled up" or forced to reposition. I think after Fredricksburg and Chancellorville Lee had become overconfident and was described as "het up".
Had he made a greater threat to Harrisburg the Confederacy would have served militarily and politically.
