A couple of general observations:

1) Many volunteer companies which entered service in 1861 organized under state militia laws law which allowed and even encouraged uniforms and headgear of different styles and colors. These were often worn by members when they mustered for Confederate service.

2) Once entering service, individual styles and colors worn by volunteers quickly disappeared. As original unforms wore out, replacements were restricted by wartime conditions. Always burdened by production and supply for her armies, attempts to maintain a special appearance for each company and regiment only increased the strain on the Confederacy. By the middle of 1862, most soldiers serving in the field armies wore uniforms issued by quartermasters for those commands. They also wore distinctive items of clothing supplied by 1) family members, 2) individual purchase, and 3) captured Federal sources.

3) To determine uniforms and equipment in use by soldiers in the field armies, time and place are far more important factors than regiment or company. For instance, after the spring of 1862, officers and men of South Carolina regiments assigned to Manigault's Brigade could not be distinguished from officers and men of Alabama regiments in the same brigade.

A trip to the museum would be helpful, but in the meantime, try locating recent publications on arms, uniforms and equipment. The Museum of the Confederacy has a special booklet on this subject, and Echoes of Glory, Vol. II (the Confederacy) contains a wealth of information from a variety of collections:
