Old George Kirk continued to torment " Tarheels " after the war, according to Vernon Crows' book " Storm in The Mountians. " He mustered out of the Union Army on 14 July,1865. In 1870 the Governor of North Carolina, a William Holden sent Kirk and a regiment of militia to put down a Klu Klux Klan "uprising" in Caswell and Alamance counties. He seized the Alamance Courthouse, burned, looted, and arrested over 100 North Carolinians. It came to be known as the "Kirk-Holden War" and brought about the impeachment of Governor Holden.
