My g-g-grandfather was one of those recurited by G.W. Kirk...he and his three brothers... they would be part of the men who spearhead Unionist activity in the Unaka Mountains of North Carolina. However they eventualy joined a TN Mounted Regiment USA. They weren't part of Kirk's 2nd and 3rd NC Mounted Infantry. Kirk's buying of repeating rifles would save him coming back from a raid in I think Waynesville NC. Pined down and surronded by Rebel forces it looked bad for Kirk...I think the Rebs were part of the 62nd and 64th NC Infantry....those elements left over from the surrender of the Cumberland Gap....But the rebs ran out of bullets and Kirk and his men made their way back to Knoxville.
