The battle of Champion Hill was a signifigant battle for my ancestors within the 3rd Mounted Infantry of Kentucky, Loring, and Buford. Tilhman provided an escape route at the time he was killed.At night, Loring got lost on his retreat and went on to Jackson to allign with Johnson and defended Jackson and avoided capture at Vicksburg, Did Alabama do the same ? I had the opportunity to see the memorial to Lloyd Tilhman at the sight he was killed as you said by a single round of a cannon while sighting it for a new recruit. I walked the route that Bufords troops used at Champion Hill, this was not an extremely large battle area and the CSA was apparently well surrounded when Tilgman protected the retreat. The only thing that seperated North and South troops were the bonfires after dark that Loring used to move his troops, quietly beyond.
