6th Tn at Shiloh

We are having difficulty finding records on my gg grandfather, William Creig Taylor of Madison Co.,Tn., written in biographies as having been in the 6th Tenn Infantry. I read where the 6th along with the 9th fought at Shiloh, where they suffered 500 casualties and reported loss of muster rolls and company records. Can I safely assume this is why we get no service records on him?
Were no other records kept but those kept with the company?

Three other William C. Taylor's are listed in military and pension records listed with ancestry.com but they were not from the Madison Co. area. One is Rutherford Co. This is still a mystery and has been with my family for many years now.
