Confederate enlistments at Missionary Ridge

If a man living in NW Georgia enlisted at Missionary Ridge on November 15, 1863 during the siege, is it likely he would have been conscripted from his home in Ga. and forced to enlist or were there a significant number of men who joined up to help the Confederates during that time..

Does anyone have information about recruitment by Confederates during the period after Chickamauga and before Nov. 25 breakout on Missionary Ridge?

I am looking for an ancestor and have the military records of someone who may be him. This person enlisted 11/15/63 and was killed about 3 months later. He enlisted in the 154th Senior Regiment Tennessee Infantry (1 Tenn. vols). Senior in this instance,as I understand it, refers to the age of the regiment, not the men,as the regiment had been around since before the War.

Also, if a person volunteered for duty at that time, would he likely have been given a choice of the regiment he wanted to join, or would he have been assigned to a particular one.

Thanks very much for your help. I am fairly new to this research and need all the help I can get.
