Roy, yes there was a very solid prison at that location. It was on the banks of the a river, the Alabama if my memory serves me correctly. It was at a site of a cotton warehouse. There are at least two books about the prison and it is also listed on the web.

After the fall of Selma, the POW's were released and sent to an exchange camp just out side of Vicksburg. Most of them had to walk there. They then had to await for the steam boats to take them north. There were also some men from Andersonville on the Sultana.

Each year, a group of families of the survivers of the Sultana gather to remember there ancesters who died there. Last year they met at Athens, Al, and toured the site of the fort there and the site of the battle of Sulphur Treatle. Check the web for this years gathering
