In Response To: POWs On The Sultana ()

According to the book, "Disaster on the Mississippi" By Gene Eric Salacker, the 2,300 prisoners on board were from two camps: Andersonville in South Carolina and Cahaba in Alabama. My ancestors were captured by Nathan Bedford Forrest and sent to Cahaba Prison. My relatives in the TN 43rd Cavalry: Moses Gamble(died), Samuel(survived,)his brother, William Pickens(died,)and Bartley McMurray(survived,) my gggreat uncle, were all from Blount County, TN. I have a photo taken just last month of the monument erected in memory of them and others who died/ survived the Sultana disaster in Mt. Olive Cemetery, outside of Knoxville. I recommend the book-the first-hand accounts are worth the read, as well as the records of specifics: hospital, witness, and reasons behind why the Sultana sunk.
