I am trying to find info on K Company, 11th NY Cav. I am researching 2 men. One was named Benjamin G. Hill and the other one was William F. Cost.

Both were from Virginia. Benjamin G. Hill originally signed up with the 7th Va. Inf. CSA on Mar. 1, 1862. On 28 June, 1862 he deserted and on the 22nd of 1862, he went into DC and signed up with K Company.

William started out with the 1st Batt'n. DC Inf guard. He joined the 11th on 20 Aug., 1862. He stayed in Washington to [I think] guard Pres. Abe Lincoln when Benjamin and the rest of the 11th went south to the Gulf.

I am trying to find a "Paper Trail" to connect William F. Cost to guarding Pres. Lincoln.

I have the Burnside carbine that William carried. It has his name "W F Cost" on the right side of the stock. On the left side of the stock are the initials "B G H"; which I have found to belong to "Benjamin G. Hill".

I am sure these 2 men were good friends as they both were in K Company at the sams time. If anyone out there can help me with any information about K Company and what it's duties were; or William F. Cost/Benjamin G. Hill, please contact me
Thanks much!
