Noting that he was a 19 year old Lieutenant would lead one to believe he came from a well-to-do family. This is further reinforced by the fact that his body was reinterred in a family plot, that is, if I read your post correctly.

It was not at all rare that folks with means had family servants/slaves. He, like most young men at the time, joined the Confederate Army to "drive the Northern Vandals from our soil."

Rutledge was some 30 miles by roadway from Cumberland Gap. Doubtful that he would have been originally been buried at the Gap
