I am only familiar with Sevier County. I studied very closely the 1850 and 1860 Slave census. Noted all of them and where they came from. I then studied the rolls of the 39th Tennessee Mounted Infantry, Company A. Company A was made up of Sevier County boys, all from the valley region, where the more well-to-do folks lived. Most of the officers in that company were the sons of slave owners. Sevier County was definitely not a Confederate county. I documented a little over 800 soldiers for Sevier County, and only a fraction of those who were in the Confederate units actually finished their enlistment without going awol. Of the small number of Confederates who were at Vicksburg, some of them went on to serve in the Union Army. A number of the men who were in this company went awol within 3-6 months, and signed with the Union. I don't have EXACT numbers because I was too busy writing profiles to do statistics. Furthermore, I was only interested in documenting service. What side they fought on is of no concern to me. Nor are the reasons for the war. I don't debate or take sides. I do this for fun, and I only record the facts I find.
