I too was surprised that Confederate prisoners were held at TH. Most likely until Camp Morton was expanded to take in a large number of the Donelson prisoners. My Grandfather's obituary first led me to Terre Haute.... "Reverand Gresham served 4 years in the Civil War as Chaplain of the 9th.Tennessee Cavalry Battalion. He was shot in the back of the head by an unknown party outside of the prison walls while being held as a prisoner of war in Terre Haute,Indiana,which was one of the contributing causes of his death in his sixty-third year. On his right temple there was a red scabby spot about the size of a silver half-dollar. In 1887 he told me that it had been there about twenty five years. About two years ago it developed into a cancer and caused his death. His suffering the last two or three days before his death was very great. For ten or twelve hours before he died he was but little,if any,of the time in his right mind,but talked a great deal as if to himself,using such expressions as,"Glory! Glory!Blessed be the name of the Lord!Going home!" and many other like expressions."

Its interesting the obituary says Gresham was shot in the back of the head but had a large scar on the right temple. Can only presume it was an exit wound and the ball traveled around the skull. Am sure he had quite a headache at the time but did serve the remainder of the war.... I will dig out copies of the Terre Haute and Indy newspapers.Do recollect they had some interesting comments about the Confederate prisoners.
