Some of the East Tennessee newspapers occasionally published casualty lists, namely the Knoxville Register & Whig and the Athens [Tenn.] Post. Microfilm rolls for these papers are available at the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville. I hold rolls of these papers. Unfortunately we are in the process of remodeling our home and my papers are stored out of reach. I may be able to access Wednesday.

J. C. Lewis enlisted as a Private in Company H, 3rd Tennessee Infantry March 12, 1862* at Mt. Vernon, Tennessee by Capt. J. C. Boyd for a period of 12 months, present on the Jan & Feb 1862 muster with remarks: Reenlisted", no further records

* I suspect this is an error and that he enlisted in 1861, not 62'. The next bi-monthly company muster roll for the Company which are recorded in the files is that for the May & June 1863 muster. Somewhere after February 1862 he disappears from the rolls. This could have been because of: discharge, death, capture, desertion, etc. Capture seems unlikely as we would normally find Federal POW records in his file. When I gain access to my records, I do not see him on the Vicksburg, Miss. Confederate cemetery list.
