Re: Lilley's Unattached Calvary

Christy,

This may not help you too much but let me tell you about some things I found when I was looking at documents while trying to help you with your Capt. Lilley. In the later stages of the war , mainly 1864 and 1865 , several of the Mounted Texas Units were "dismounted" due to the lack of available , fit , horses. With some units, this happened as early as 1862 ( part of Sibley's Brigade was dismounted on their return from NM in '62). I have read where some units threw such a fit when they were dismounted that they just went home . The vast majority of mounted
Texans owned their own horses and when they were dismounted , the CSA gov't was supposed to compensate them, in kind , for the value of their horses. Quite often there seems to have been some severe disagreements between the individual soldier and the supply officer who was placing value on the Texan's horse. As you know , there are just some things you don't want to mess with a Texan about and I think horses fell into that category. Being as independent minded as most Texans were ( are?), they just weren't going to put up with some officer telling them they had to sell their horse and become an infantryman.Texas troops were well known for being fearless and ferocious fighters , but not too disciplined on military matters such as spit and polish , protocol , taking orders from those they did not respect or obeying orders they didn't agree with. So, my guess is , some of the Texas boys took the "religious attitude" and said "to hell with it" , and just left with their horses and went home or joined up with another mounted CSA outfit. You know,Texans were never real big on walking anyway . The distances between destinations were usually just too great plus everything on the ground in Texas could either bite you or sting you. In those days , most Texans were natural born horsemen( and women)anyway. So , don't be too surprised if this type of thing happened.
I'm getting ready to get busy with trial preparation so I'm not going to be of much help to you in your search for a while. Best of luck in your search. Craig
