There was a J. H. Bowen on the Texas 1860 census, Series: M653 Roll: 1295 Page: 264. He was a white male age 28 residing in Grimes county. He was born in Tennessee and his occupation was a farmer. He was married to Emily, a 22-year-old white female born in Texas.

There was also a John Bowen in the Texas 1860 census, Series: M653 Roll: 1303 Page: 44. He was a white male age 19 residing in Polk county. He was born in Alabama and his occupation was overseer but he had no wife at the time.

There was also a John Bowen in the Texas 1860 census, Series: M653 Roll: 1307 Page: 220. He was a white male age 30 residing in Washington county. He was born in Mississippi and his occupation was farm laborer but he had no wife at the time.
