Would have to venture a guess there were two (2) Camp Mortons...the Union which you've verified as being in Indiana and a Confederate, still to be located, probably somewhere in NE Texas. Or, possibly the Texas State Archive transcriber had a bad handwritten record to post to the index card deciphered "Camp Morton" out of a badly scrawled word. Some of the documents I've seen from that era had beautifully florid handwriting...that that is almost impossible to read even with a reasonably clear copy.

Somehow, or other, I just can't see our respective great grandpappies riding their horses all the way up to Yankee territory to enlist in a Confederate Cavalry regiment!

I wonder if some other subscriber to this page might know of some of the names of some of the camps in NE Texas. Know that Tyler had a large military installation. Were there any established camps in the Greenville...Dallas...Mount Pleasent areas?
