Re: Texas 18 th Calvary & Borders Regiment

Jack and Greg,
Let me see what I can add . Sifakis' "Compendium....." has Border's Cavalry Battalion being formed in Early 1864. It was later joined with Texas Cadet Cavalry ( aka Fulcrod's Cav Batt) in April 1864. The regiment was originally known as Anderson's - Border's Cavalry Regiment; Col. Thomas S. Anderson , commanding. They were dismounted in March of 1865 and surrendered by Gen.Edmund Kirby Smith on May 26, 1865 . At "the end" ,the regiment was known as Border's Regiment.
BrigGen Wright / Col, Simpson write that Borders originally raised his Battalion in 1864 in San Augustine, Nacogdoches , Sabine and Shelby Counties. They opine that the companies were mainly composed of men who had been serving with the Texas State Forces.
The book "Frontier Defense in the Civil War / Texas'Rangers and Rebels" by David Paul Smith ; Texas A&M University Press has a good bit of discussion about Border's Battalion / Regiment activities. You might look into it.
I've looked through 5-6 books I usually refer to on Texas CSA activities and I find no mention of a Camp Morton. Of course , it could have had 2 or three names.
Good Hunting, Craig Morin
