Re: Hardeman's Texas Cavalry Regiment

Teresa,

I primarily used Sifakis' Compendium of Confederate Armies and BGen Marcus Wright's (edit. Col Simpson ) Texas in the Civil War to find your man's regiment and their battle activities. However, there is very little narrative that goes along to describe their activities . I will list two books that cover some of their activities in Indian Territory. One is " General Stand Watie's Confederate Indians " by Frank Cunningham , San Antonio , TX , Naylor 1959. The other is a new book by Steve Warren , " Brilliant Victory, The Second Civil War Battle of Cabin Creek, Indian Territory, SEptember , 19, 1864".

You also might ask our Webmaster Jim Martin for some help here as he is very knowledgable about the significant role the Southern ( Confederate ) Cherokees played in these battles and campaigns in Indian Territory ( I.T.) and in Arkansas. The Civil War in Indian Territory Message Board ( Jim Martin- Webmaster) is also a pretty good place to place a message looking for info on those battles in I.T .

To get more specific info on the Texas Regiment's participation ( which I think is what you're after) I think I'd go at it by looking at info on other Texas Cavalry regiments that served along with Hardeman's Texas Cavalry Regiment when they served under Gano and General Sam Bell Maxey. However, you are probably going to find more written about the engagements at Poison Springs and Cabin Creek ( Second Battle) than the rest of their ( Hardeman's Texas Cavalry regiment) exploits.

W.P. ( "Gotch") Hardeman was active in the early part of the war when he served in Reily's 4th Texas Cavalry during the ill-fated New Mexico Campaign.
It is a little confusing to follow Hardeman because there are two Hardemans( W.P and Peter; cousins, I believe. Right Dr Kimmel ? ) and they served together in various Texas Cavalry units at the same time and at different times . Even more confusing ( to me ) is that Hardeman's Texas Cavalry Division was also called the 31st Texas Cavalry by some . When you combine that with the fact ( according to Sifakis) that Peter Hardeman also served with another Texas 31st Cavalry Regiment ( aka Hawpe's 31st Regiment and Guess' Cavalry Battalion) it gets a little crazy. This second 31st Texas Cavalry Regiment ( Guess/ Hawpe) served in the Red River Campaign.

Personally, I believe your man served with W.P. Hardeman's Texas Cavalry Regiment ( Texas 1st Cavalry Regiment,Arizona Brigade) who served under Col ( BGen later) Gano in operations in north Texas, Indian Territory and Arkansas. Whew ! hope this helps ?
Regards, Craig
