The number of Col. Trezevant C.Hawpe's 31st Texas Cavalry from Dallas County was incorrecty assigned to Lt. Col.Peter C. Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry - Arizona Brigade, by the Confederate headquarters but they later corrected the error.

The 1st Texas Cavalry - Arizona Brigade, was mustered into Confederate service at Eagle Lake in Colorado County but dropped the Arizona Brigade designation after the regiment was moved from Colorado County to the Warren Supply Depot (Old Fort Warren) in Fannin County. On May 30, 1863, Col. P.C. Hardeman and the 1st Texas Cavalry Regiment left Columbus in Colorado County by companies with a total of 500 men and arrived in Fannin County with only 350 effective troops, mainly due to desertions. The regiment arrived at the Warren Supply Depot on July 8,1863 and mustered about 250 additional recruits by August 8,1863. The new recruits were enlisted from the local companies of the 14th Brigade, Texas State Troops after the brigade was dissolved. Col. Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry moved to Fort Towson I.T. where it was combined with Col. Richard M. Gano's Brigade and was moved into Arkansas. In March, 1864, Col. T.C. Hawpe resigned and returned to Dallas. When the 1st Texas Cavalry regiment arrived in Arkansas, Maj. Michael Looscan assumed command of both Col. Hawpe's 31st Texas Cavalry and the 1st Texas Cavalry.

In July 1863, my great grandfather Joshua David Coffee, enlisted in Capt. John Henry Damron's Spy Company (Co.C) of Col. Peter C. Hardeman's 1st Texas Cavalry after 14th Brigade, T.S.T. was dissolved. On August 23, 1863, the 1st Texas Cavalry left the Warren Supply Depot in route to Fort Towson, with a force of only eight of the regulation ten companies and few of the eight were full. Capt. John H. Damron's Company (Co.C) had a full compliment of 100 men. As Damron's Company moved out ot Texas into Indian Territory, my great grandfather and 23 men of Damron's Spy Company were detached and placed on picket duty at Colbert's Ferry on the Red River, north of Denison Texas.
