Re: 31st Tx Cavalry Co A(Hardeman)

Danny,

I agree with your assumption. This is a fuzzy area for me to understand. Col. Hawpe resigned after the battle of Newtonia, Missouri and returned to Dallas to maintain his freight business.

Maj. Looscan may have assumed command of both the 31st Texas and the 1st Texas Cavalry for a short period before the 31st Texas was place in Brig.Gen. Cammille de Polignac's Brigade. I assume that because Maj. Looscan is mentioned among the field officers of both the 31st and 1st Texas Cavary. However, I am sure Maj.Looscan he took command of the 1st Texas Cavalry at least during the Poison Springs and Camden Expedition. I do not know what happened to Col. Hardeman when Maj.Looscan took command because Col. Hardeman returned to Fannin County Texas in November 1864 after the battle at Cabin Creek,I.T. and was combined with McFarland's and Bone's independent companies and was ordered to Hempstead,Texas and was dismounted. Col. Hardeman surrendered the 1st Texas Cavalry at Camp Groce in April 1865.

In the fall of 1865, Col. P.C. Hardeman took a sawmill and his family to Sao Paulo Brazil and established the colony of Americana and never returned. His descendants live there today.
