Re: WBTS NEWS: Scandinavians in CSA !

Howdy again,Alexander !

I have to add a little more about what you asked about.

There is some sides about Scandinavians in the CSA, and that is that the Scandinavians had different "strongholds" in the South.

For Norwegians part Texas are the main state, since it was there thet had their stronghold. The reason you`ll find if you point your browser to http://clifton.centraltx.com/ .

If you live in TX, you can stop by the town and maybe visit Norse and the churh there. Most of the men resting there are Norwegian Confedrate soldiers.

The Swedes and Danes (from what I know) had their strongholds in the old Southern states - S-Carolina,N-Carolina,Georgia and Virginia. You`ll find settelments of old origin there as far back as the 16th century.

Louisiana was the state where you`ll find most Scandinavians together - and in number. There you`ll find the only company with a Scandinavian name in the Southern Army as a whole. This company was called "The Scandinavian Guards of New Orleans". The company consisted of Swedes,Danes,Germans and some Norwegians. It was a part of the Chalmette Regiment, Louisiana State Troops. The company consisted of approx.100 men.

The reason for finding Scandinavians in Louisiana are that New Orleans had the status in the South as the "Port to South" as New York had in the North when it comes to immigration. One other main reason are that you maybe know - the Scandinavians are a seafaring people, so many of them in the city was sailors when they arrived there.

The most famous Scandinavian "Civil War family" are the Dahlgrens - famed for the Dahlgren guns, and that one was Rear Admiral for the US Navy and his son did play a very important part in the raid of Richmond,Col.Ulrik Dahlgren. What few know is that the Rear Admiral had a brother that in fact was a Brigader-General in the CSA. He was the founder of the 3rd Brigade, Army of Mississippi ( 3rd and 7th MS Inf)His name was Charles G Dahlgren.

The Dahlgrens was of Swedish heritage - their father was Swedish.

I hope I`ve shed some more light on your questions,Alexander.
