Re: Sterling J. McKnight, Co B, 22nd TX Cavalry

Patricia:

I went back tomy index card to check the data -- nothing too high tech here -- and I see that CAPT McKnight is listed as being born 13 Dec 1835, and having died on 3 Apr 1916. Accordingly, he certainly could be the officer you mentioned. The tombstone lists him as a member of Co B, but that is not inconsistent with his subseqeuntly being appointed in AAIG corps; regimental adjutants usually were captains in rank (sometimes lieutenants). Although I have been to West Hill Cemetery in Dalton, I did not inventory the full cemetery, only the Confederate section, which is small, and relied on the Whitfield County Cemetery Book for my information. I ahve not checked my cemetery listings against census data, so I cannot tell you if he was a Georgian who enlisted in a Texas regiment -- there appear to be a number of those -- or if he lived in Texas at the time of his enlistment, and later moved (or returned) to Georgia prior to his death. It sounds to me -- and this is just a guess -- that if he was with the Army of the Frontier, that he was a Texan at the time of the War. Were he a Georgian, I doubt he would ahve gone to Texas on furlough and then gotten picked up in the Indian fighting. That kind of work would be left to the frontier men, not us "effete" Easterners! (I'm a South Carolinian.) But my Grandpa, yes, he was born in 1837 (we marry and breed late) went to Texas after the War, but whether from a bad marriage, or from a flight from difficulty with the Radicals, I cannot say. He stayed there until the end of Reconstruction in Carolina, which did not end until 1877, and then he came home. And some of his cousins -- they had changed their name to Starkey -- were in Texas by the time of the War. Let me know what you know about this Texas officer.
Thanks!
