Company B, 1st Cavalry Regiment, Texas State Troops was raised in Anderson County, Texas. It is very unlikely that the Sam Gray who served in this company would have been from Denton County. The entire regiment was composed of men from Northeast and Southeast Texas.

Denton County was in the 21st Brigade District and all of the counties in this district were exempt from service in the Texas State Troops that were raised for 6-months service in the Confederate Army from August 1863-February 1864. During that period, a person from Denton County would have likely served in Bourland's Battalion, Texas Cavalry (later known as Bourland's Regiment, Texas Cavalry).

A person's age is very important in determining what type of military service they were in. In 1864 and 1865, men who were 17 or between 45 and 50 would have probably been in the Texas Reserve Corps. Unfortunately, very few records of these units are available. The Denton County reserves were part of McGinnis' Battalion, which became McGinnis' Regiment. For a while, they guarded Federal prisoners at Camp Ford.

Knowing what units were raised in the various Texas counties is also helpful. I have most of this information listed on my webpage. I have not yet added the information about the Texas State Troops or the Texas Reserve Corps.
