Re: Francis L Price. AAG Robertsons Brigade

According to General Robertson's official report, his assistant adjutant-general, F. L. Price, was thought to have been either killed or captured soon after daybreak on 3 July while carrying out Robertson's order to report on the position of the brigade. In fact, Price was taken captive by the Federals and was sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio prison camp for Confederate officers (where incidentally Price's residence was listed as Austin, Texas). At that hour, Robertson's brigade occupied a line running in a general north-south direction along the northeastern slope of Big Round Top, but due to the nature of the ground, which was exposed between the Round Tops east of Devil's Den, the left of the brigade was "in the air;" that is, it did not connect with any other troops. In the dim light of dawn, it is quite possible that Price missed or walked through the Confederate battle line, right into the Federal lines. The same thing happened to others as well, notably Captain Cussons on General Law's staff, whose Alabama brigade was on Robertson's right. By the way, the zig-zag line of Robertson and Law, which was made of gathered stones anchored by the many boulders strewn over the hillside, is still intact and rarely seen by visitors, although the park road cuts through it west of the summit of Big Round Top.
