Alignment at Gettysburg
In Response To: Re: Slight correction ()

Len,

According to my calculations, at dawn on 3 July, Ayre's division was a little further north, behind the summit of Little Round Top, but at that hour I can tell you with some precision about the Federal troops in front of Robertson's brigade, which was aligned (from left to right): 3 Arkansas - 1 Texas - 4 Texas - 5 Texas. The Federal alignment (this time from right to left) was 9 Pennsylvania Reserves (opposite 3 Arkansas), 10 Pennsylvania Reserves, 83 Pennsylvania, and 20 Maine. Around 7 am, part of the First Division of the Fifth Corps came forward on either side of the 9 and 10 Pennsylvania Reserves. The 83 Pennsylvania and 20 Maine were relieved (right to left) by the 9 Massachusetts, 118 Pennsylvania and 1 Michigan, while on the opposite side the 22 Massachusetts joined the right of the 9 Pennsylvania Reserves, and the 18 Massachusetts joined the right of the 22 Massachusetts. The three largest regiments in this Union line were 9 and 10 Pennsylvania Reserves and 9 Massachusetts, and they covered the bulk of Robertson's front.
