After Iuka and at Corinth on the 3 and 4th of October the regiments were held in reserve.
The 5th of October at Hatchie Bridge, they were again in the front and were cut up with an Infantry Brigade after crossing the Bridge. Only a stand by Ross and the members of Phifer's Brigade which he was acting commander saved the day. He held the bridge head and was supported by artillery and Cabel's Brigade. This allowed Van Dorn's Army to retreat. Only a few of the 27th made it back with their commander. Many more were lost and captured.
Which brings up another point. All the wounded and captured from Corinth and Iuka and Hatchie Bridge were held in Iuka. Some were paroled there and some sent to St Louis. I am sure some died at Iuka. Are they also included in this burial or is there a separate site? There was also a hospital there doing surgery. Could the dead from the surgeries and wounded also been included in this site. I have ask this question of Mr Kirk also. He is doing a book on Ross' Texas Cavalry Brigade which will include the rosters of the 4 Texas Regiments. At the Wilson Creek site there is a detailed roster of the 3rd Texas Cavalry Regiment. I am going over that as a comparison. The 27th has long needed someone to write their story. Twelve Companies and were cut down to about 200 men in May 65 after the Corinth, Vicksburg, Meridian. Atlanta, and Tennessee Campaigns. That was 10 companies gone. The figures above have a telling affect.
The Union buried those dead at Corinth supported by a detail of Southerners. Those dead at Hatchie Bridge are buried there from what I have read. MY GGF was wounded at Hatchie Bridge, captured and paroled by the 16th of October at Iuka. He made it back in time to be remounted and join the Holly Springs Raid on 15 Dec. He shoed his horse on 1 Dec.
An aside, Colonel then Captian Mabry was captured at Iuka and held for a year. He would not sign a parole that stated "Supposed Confederacy States". He led the Texas Brigade for a short period and we given to General Forrest as a Brigade Commander. He was never officially made a General.
I am looking forward to visiting Wilson Creek, Corinth, Hatchie Bridge and of course Shiloh in June.
