I have four family members who served in Capt. Dan Short’s Co E, 3rd Texas Cavalry, two of whom died in the war. My great-grandfather, Benjamin Milam Johnson (1838-1915) enlisted at Camp Wigfall, Ark., on Jan. 26, 1862 and was medically discharged at Princeville (Tupelo), Miss., on July 25, 1862, after having spent 60 days in hospital (chronic bronchitis and chronic diarrhea). His youngest brother, Alvey R. Johnson, Jr (1842-1862), died at Corinth on June 7, 1862, and eldest brother, James L. Johnson (1829-1862), reportedly died as POW on December 30, 1862. Their brother-in-laws, Jacob Smith (1833-1882) and William Robert Burns (1843-1900) obviously survived the war, though Jacob’s furlough from 1865 indicating he latterly served in Captain T.J. Glover’s “B” Corps of Scouts. Their father was Dr. Robert Burns (1797-1855) of Logansport, LA, somewhat made famous for the killing of Charles Watt Moorman, the former leader of the Regulators. Another 3rd Texas trooper, Mortimer W. Bradley (1840-??), was the only son of John M. Bradley (1800-1849) of Panola County, famed in the Texas Revolution. Mortimer was a ward to Milam’s father, Alvey R. Johnson, Sr (1803-1862), who served as the administrator on John M. Bradley’s estate and legal guardian of the four Bradley orphans. Consequently, my great-grandfather and his sister, Ellen (1834-1874), spouse to Jacob Smith, were the only surviving children of Alvey R. Johnson, Sr. of Shelby County, Texas.
