I read something recently about the incident involving the steamship Star of the West which was fired upon cadets from the Citadel. This occurred several months before the bombardment of Ft Sumter.

Also, many of those who were recruited for Rip Ford's Cavalry of the West in late 1863 to early 1864 were teenage boys, but unfortunately these units are poorly documented.
