Re: deserters from texas Csa in 1863

There were no official reprisals after the war, because the Confederacy no longer existed to pursue it.

As Vicki says the war was over and the Southern Confederacy got outscored. This is an interesting subject. It is probable there would have been numerous personal reprisals. Both physical and social. The extent of which has not been investigated to my knowledge in detail.Recollect that 60,000 Trans-Mississippi soldiers went home fully armed at the end.Texans are loath to admit defeat.I believe it was General Sheridan who said those unrepentent Texans dont realize yet the war is over and we won. They need to be taught a lesson. We know that homicides in the State increased ten fold after the war.In general the victims were freedpeople, federal soldiers and white Texas unionists. There would have been many old scores to settle at least until the hot blooded fireaters all flamed out...

For conditions in North Texas during the war check out Rochette's interesting work on the Brush Battalion.
