A couple of books I recommend reading on the subject are:

Brush Men & Vigilantes: Civil War Dissent in Texas by David Pickering and Judy Falls
and
Frontier Defense in the Civil War: Texas Rangers and Rebels by David Paul Smith.

Some who were captured and were to be taken to trial for desertion never made it there, neck-tie parties and executions were the norm along the way. I don’ know of anyone carrying out these lawless acts ever being held responsible. After the war those in “Confederate Service” were basically pardoned, and never to be held accountable.
