Joe, The two regiments 1st / 27th and the 3rd Texas ran head on into Ord's Division. Their loss that day from KIA and the rest that died of wounds between 19 Sep and 30 Sep 1862 lay in a mass grave at Shady Grove Cemetery in Iuka. With them the Union buried all the soldiers from all over north Mississippi (162)who had died of wounds and disease in the months before the battle . The loss of Price's Army that day were great with 103 KIA and many more dieing in the next few days. Twenty two (22) were from the 27th and twenty five (25) from the 3rd Texas. Nineteen (19) were from the 3rd Louisiana Inf. Six other units lost thirty seven (37). A search for names of those buried in Shady Grove mass grave can be found at www.alabama37th.com/iuka.htm. The story is found in Peter Cozzen's book, The Darkest Days of the War, The Battles of Iuka and Corinth.

The actions of the 3rd and 27th that day were heroic. The 3rd was forward of the Army as skirmishers. The 27th was the right flank. Many soldiers died after the closing of the mass grave and only if their graves were marked in the Iuka cemeteries is their locations known. Many lie in unmarked graves.

I agree that this should be a study of our children, but the Civil War along with George Washington and many other heroes is lost. Our children know of Che Guevara, Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson.
