Re: United Confederate Veterans Encampments

The Confederate veterans in and around Rockwall organized on February 20, 1892--"This has been a great day in Rockwall. Notice had been given that ex-confederate veterans would assemble and organize a camp, and hundreds were in the city. They were invited to the hotel and restaurants, where a feast of good things had been prepared for them by generous and hospitable citizens of the city, led by that indomitable and enthusiastic old veteran, Col. John D. Boydstrun. At 1 o'clock, the time set for the assembling, the opera house was unable to seat the large throng that had gathered and numbers had to stand...Then they proceeded to organize Rockwall camp Texas ex-Confederate Veterans, by selecting the old one-arm hero, Capt. M. S. Austin, commander... [Dallas Morning News] I didn't see anything else in the Dallas Morning News that discussed a big encampment--mostly just business meetings and planning to attend conventions elsewhere. Crockett Boone was not listed as any of the original officers, which includes titles like commander, 1st lieutenant, 2nd lieutenant, 3rd lieutenant, adjutant, chaplain, commissary sergeant, and quartermaster.

Rockwall has a very impressive new public library and I'm betting they have a local history/genealogy room--

And there is a genealogy and history site: http://www.rockwallroots.org/index.htm
They may be able to help you with specific Rockwall questions.

Mason's library is much smaller--http://bcls.tsl.state.tx.us/mason and their online genealogical sources are not as complete--http://www.txgenweb2.org/txmason/ (scroll down to near the bottom). We're talking a really small town. There are incomplete runs for the Mason County News, the Mason County Herald, and the Mason Herald for those years, but I don't know if any index exists.
Perhaps the local SCV camp would know something about the encampment. Mason doesn't have a SCV camp but Fredericksburg does--http://www.texas-scv.org/camps/hillcountry1938.html. They don't claim Mason, according to their webpage, but they would probably be able to direct you to the right folks.
