Re: United Confederate Veterans Encampments

Mr. Toyer--Thanks for the information. I agree that many times people used titles that weren't something earned in battle. However, there is no doubt about Crockett Boone's service in the Confederate States of America, as I have copies of all of his official records, including his parole certificate after being captured at Vicksburg. He was assistant quartermaster sergeant at the end of the war.
I do believe that during Sul Ross' terms as Commanding General of the United Confederate Veterans, he granted the honorary title of "colonel" to Crockett Boone. I have hired professional researchers in both Texas and at the LSU, where many UCV records are held. Hopefully they will find the proof I am seeking. I also have a copy of his obituary dated Jan. 6, 1911 from the Santa Anna News in Coleman County, Texas, which lists his Civil War battles, and says "he was made a U.C.V. colonel under Gen. Ross."
As a newspaper editor myself, I always try to get as many facts as I can, and don't rely entirely on what people say. However, based on everything I have read about my great-great-uncle, I believe he would have told the truth when he filled out his papers for the Robert E. Lee Camp 158 of United Confederate Veterans, and was a member of Sul Ross' staff at some point during the 1890s--I just have to find the proof.
