It sounds like you probably know all this but...
I assume you are referring to "Alfred" D. Hines, private, Company I, 13th TX Vols (Bates), enrolled March 9, 1862 in Navarro Cty for 12 months. The 13th was a mixed infantry, cavalry, and artillery regiment. The 13th was split up and the cavalry companies added to Brown's 12th Battalion TX Cav with Afred in Company D and reenlisted for the duration of the war at Valesco on April 10th. On Jan 18, 1863 he is detailed for ten days to go to Washington Cty for horses, takes sick and is still there at the end of April. In the Sept/Oct returns he is listed as bugler and present for duty. In November, the battalion is increased to a regiment, the 35th (Brown's) Texas Cavalry. Alfred drowned in Matagorda Bay on Dec. 31, 1863.
