Re: Ben Bickerstaff 11th Texas Cavalry

A few notes on Ben Biggerstaff from Traylor Russell's "History of Titus County."
His trouble with the occupation forces started when he killed a negro on his way home from the war in Louisana.
From 1865 until 1869 he was involved in a lot of trouble in NE Texas up to including stealing a US Army supply train
near Sulphur Springs,Tx.
There was 3 different groups that terrorized the area, Bob Lee operated out of Delta Co. Ben Biggerstaft fom Gray Rock, Titus Co.
and Cullan Baker in Cass Co.
On Aug 27, 1868 M Gen. J.J. Reynolds comander of US Army reconstruction forces in Texas put a $3,000 reward on the 3 of them deliveried to Austin,Tx.
In early 1869 Ben and Matt Kirby left Gray Rock for Alvaroda. He suspected that some members of his gang where planning to kill him for the reward and he moved to Alvaroda.
When he went to Alvarado, he went by the name Ben Thomason.

There are still Biggerstaft's in Titus and Franklin counties.
