Re: What does this grave marker mean?

During the Civil War, William J Gilmore and his wife Margaret wrote letters to each other, and some of the letters have been passed down through the generations. Some are dated 1863 and 1864. One of the letters from William he states he is "in the Chaperell Bresh about 8 to 10 miles from the Rio Grande". The letter also states "camp near Rio Grande City". Another letter from William to Margaret states they "will be moving to Brownsville". (Spelled as written) Because of these dates, it makes me think he stayed in the War until it was over.

These letters lead me to believe he was in some sort of military unit. Don't you have to have some sort of proof of enlistment in order to have a special marker placed at ones grave?

Any thoughts on all this? Thanks again for all the previous information.
