Re: Line of Battle, Ross' Brigade

My problem is that I know most of the data that concerns the officers and in some cases the enlisted. Long ago I saught out Wharton's detail. Texas does not consider him a Texan as he went to Louisiana after the war and served as Chief Justice and also Marshal for the State of Louisiana during one of their political scandals. His problems with troops was more that he was not cut from the mold of Ross. He tended to charge any enemy configuration, and the troops felt he was reckless. He was more comfortable with officers and was considered well liked in officer circles. His Courts Marshal was more to clear his name than to find guilt. That it did, but it then placed Pete Ross as excess and he was on Ross' staff for the rest of the war.

Wharton was the guy you sent to get something you needed. Often he was on detail to get uniforms or blankets. Wharton completed a 4 year stent as Marshal of Louisiana and died at the age of 50. His family took him back to Maryland for burial, Thus he is lost to Texas.
