Re: Likens 35th Texas Cavalry Roster

Melvin,
Thank you for your input. Yes, your great grand father Henry C. Taylor is on my Master Roster which has been assembled for Likens' Rgt. This roster can be found at the Heritage Center in Rusk. Company F of Likens' 35th Texas Calvary was commanded by Captain John T. Wiggins of Cherokee County.

You will not find Pvt Taylor in the National Archives records because there is no surviving roster of the entire regiment. Unfortunately, I do not have a great deal of info on Henry, but the following is what I have:

* Henry C. Taylor's name was found in the "Civil War Records of Cherokee Co", Tx., Vol I (Rosters of Co F & Co I), By Ogreta W. Huttash, 1982 (Clayton Genealogical Research Library, Houston, Tx)
* His widow filed for a pension, #00747.
* Enlisted Sept '63. Per witnesses in pension he enlisted in Capt Wiggins company in Sept 1863 and served to the close of the war. (b1820Al-d1882). Another source shows he was born in 1823, but that may be an error.
* Captain Wiggins company was originally part of Likens' Battalion of 5 companies assembled at Tyler, but only for a short time. In October 1863, they were ordered to Camp Lubbock on Buffalo Bayou in Houston and merged with Burns' Battalion of 3 companies and three surplus companies from Terrell's 37th Regiment Texas Cavalry. Two companies were consolidated and in late November 1863, Likens' 35th Texas Cavalry was activated into Confederate Service.
* Likens' Rgt served on the Gulf Coast until ordered to Louisiana in March 1864 where they participated in the Red River Campaign.
* After the Federal army was defeated and retreated back to the Mississippi, the 35th was part of a small division of cavalry which operated as pickets and harassed the Yankees in the Upper Atchafalaya Basin until ordered back to Texas in February 1865 and dismounted.
* In May 1865, the 35th consisted of 15 officer and 162 enlisted men present for duty while serving in Galveston when the war ended.
* Captain Wiggins was one of the witnesses on the pension for Henry's widow.

That is about all I have on Henry, but we have considerable information on Likens' Rgt not found online or in books. If you would like a copy of the pension, let me know. My email is jdssrb7734@gmail.com
