Linda,hope you don't mind if I add to your puzzle. LOL In the book "The Band of Heroes" by James M. McCaffrey there are a David Conner,John Conner, and John H. Conner all of Co.H,24th Texas Cavalry . Another book I have,"Texas Confederate Deaths In Union Hospitals & Prisons" taken from National Archives microfilm lists John Conner of 24th Texas Cavalry,Co. H as dieing on Mar.06,1863 but nothing is listed of the other 2 Conner men. So are you sure of your Conner middle name. Reason I ask is IF by chance John H. Conner and David Conner were able to escape capture at Arkansas Post. They would probably joined up with first Texas Unit they came to and would explain how he got to battle at Mansfield,La.. JMO
