I'm curious about one part of this letter:
"Duncan (m) is gone out to Gingles today. Duncan has a cold and has done no duty this week."

There are over a dozen Duncan's in my family, including some in Texas, and my mother's maiden name is Duncan. Do you know anything more about this Duncan, including his last name?
