William Atkinson in 18th Infantry

I am interested in any information on William Atkinson.
My 2nd Great Grandfather was a William Atkinson. He lived in Jefferson, Texas on Lake Street. According to the 18th Infantry list, there was a William D. Atkinson that served with the 18th. The records say he was a butcher.
Family history says our William was a purser on a riverboat.
The only other info I have is that he moved from Illionis in the late 1840's. He was going to Mississippi. In the late 1850's he was living in Jefferson. He died in Natchez 25 December 1866. I have no idea why he was in Natchez.
Can anyone help?
