A teamster was the forerunner of a trucker. There were 3 main parts of a regiment that used teamsters, Ordance which took in the armment of the unit, commisary which handled food stuff and quarter master which was the suppy part of the regiment. So he could have hauled anything from hay and fodder for the horses and mules, to firewood or anything in between.
