I'm not sure what regiment Hugh McGuire was in. He was from Winchester and he was a Confederate cavalry man. Based on the information Gordon supplied, I have done some reading regarding the Battle of Amelia Springs, which was part of the final Appomattox campaign: McGuire served under Fitzhugh Lee, and the the Confederate cavalry was desperately trying to clear out Federal cavalry that was destroying supplies and disrupting the retreat from Richmond. The battle apparently was mostly cavalry against cavalry.
