Gordon,
Thank you for the information. There is a sad beauty in Hugh McGuire's death, in that he died in much the same way as his namesake. The Winchester McGuires proudly traced their lineage to the Macguire Princes of Fermanagh, Ireland. The last Maguire Prince, also named Hugh Maguire, was the brother of the Confederate McGuire's ancestor, and was also slain in a cavalry skirmish in 1600.
There is a monument in County Cork near the defile where the Irish Hugh Maguire was leading a small reconnaisance group when he was attacked by a company of English cavalry. Macguire charged directly at the leader, Sir Warham St. Ledger, and killed him with a lance thrust in the face. However, St. Ledger had managed to mortally wound Maguire with a pistol shot. Macguire lived long enough to escape in the confusion and was secretly buried to keep the English from mounting his head on a pike.

This story is well known in the McGuire Clan, and was probably mentioned after Hugh McGuire'e sad death.

Mac
