Confederate troops wasted precious time leaving Cold Harbor in 1864. Grants Army of the Potomac had left the field and was rapidly approaching a river crossing before the Confederates got moving. Especially Hill's Corps. Porter Alexander described the inactivity of the ANV after the battle, literally drooling at the possibility of manning the trenches at Petersburg before Garnt's troops could get there. He remarked on the precision and expetise that every trench line and gun emplacement was prepared and ready for action. Well, we finally got there in piecemeal fashion but once agin the opportunity was compromised or lost.
