Generals are not normally known for their lucidity of pen, but two Confederate generals do stand out; Richard Taylor, and Porter Alexander. If you've not read Alexander's memoirs published by UNC Press 12 or 14 years ago, you need to indulge yourself. He had been sent to Nicaragua (I don't believe I got that spelling right!) to assist in settling a border dispute, and he hand wrote out the memoirs. The original manuscripts are in the Southern Historical Collection at Chapel Hill and all that Gary Gallagher did was to footnote them. He did a masterful job, but it is Alexander who truly shines. I would call him the Shelby Foote of first person accounts. Alexander's boyhood home is located a half hour's drive west of me, in Washington, Ga; it is open during the Christmas tour of homes, but I have not been.
