The Otey Battery did some tough service in the mountainous terrain of [West] Virginia early in the war. Captain George G. Otey was mortally wounded at Lewisburg, [West] Virginia in May 1862. The battery was in Western Virginia as part of a force protecting the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad from advancing Federal forces.

The Eleanor S. Brockenbrough Library at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond has 63 letters written by Corporal Charles C. Baughman of the Otey Battery. These letters date from May 1861 to March 1865. Soldiers frequently mention comrades in letters.
