The Richmond Daily Dispatch: February 1, 1865. Wednesday morning

The News.
Rumor of a raid.

Early yesterday morning it was reported that the enemy's cavalry had started from their extreme right, on the Darbytown road, on a raid against the Central railroad. This report found few believers among citizens; but the military authorities were more credulous, and, we regret to say, not better-informed, and, consequently, the reserve brigade was called to arms. They were, however, dismissed without being sent on any forced march to look for an enemy. The report originated in the fact that a small body of local cavalry, a portion of Major Wood's battalion, who have been on duty at some of the railroad bridges above, having been disbanded, were seen coming into the city, and were mistaken for Yankee troopers. This, together with the further fact that, whilst the cavalry were approaching the city, a section of artillery was seen going out Brook avenue, as if to meet them, furnished the requisite material for rumors of a Yankee raid.

I believe this Major Wood was in fact, Capt. William S. Wood, age 46, enlisted July 1, 1863 at Richmond in Wm. S. Wood's Company A, 1st Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, Local Defense Force, which consisted of three companies, A. B. C;
on January 9, 1865 he signed a requisition as Commanding, 1st Battalion of Cavalry, L. D. F., approved by BGen. G. W. Lee

Believe George Washington Custis Lee was in command of military forces in the city of Richmond at this time.
