Richmond Daily Dispatch
In Response To: Re: Identify this Unit ()

George:

The Richmond Daily Dispatch has been an invaluable resource. I had access to its microfilm many years ago, so long ago that my copies are made on treated paper, so when the wartime issues came on line a year or so ago, it was a treat. I always find new matter when I go back through material. I only wish they would have put in the advertisements -- I found a number of notices of stolen or strayed horses, etc. To go back through now and to run across a name, even when they have appeared in the Mayor's Court (the last one I found was for being drunk on the streets and using profane language; he was turned over to the provost marshal) makes these men come alive.

On my wish list, I would like to see the Richmond Daily Examiner given the same treatment. It has a wealth of material on wartime Richmond.

On a separate post on this Board, I'll share a postware reminiscence of one of the members of the Legion about their experiences on the lines in the Winter of 1865.
